I'm a huge fan of this record.  LT's other Groove Merchant album, I Offer You, is terrific too. . . . On both albums, Thompson's soprano playing (in particular) is just gorgeous.  We're talking Johnny Hodges-like liquidity and shapeliness -- but on a soprano, not an alto.

Always good to hear (more) from Lucky Thompson ....

Kenny Davern with Steve Lacy, Steve Swallow, Paul Motian – Unexpected.

This platter makes me wish Steve Swallow would have stayed with (or at least used alternatively) acoustic bass ....

It is interesting. A mix of Breton players on traditional instruments and themes with freeish jazz piano and reeds, plus percussion.

It slightly suffers from being a bit of a porridge, but it is enjoyable. Could have been more than enjoyable though, I think.

Thanks, not generally a porridge fan but will have a stream as the concept sounds interesting

Unexpected for sure. I knew Davern fairly well before he passed away. Quite a guy.

He's not a player whom I know very well. Those first two Soprano Summit records are good. Otherwise, pretty unknown to me.

Currently listening to The Gotham Scene by Bobby Hackett after the post of the Mosaic a few days ago.
