jazzbo
Jon Irabagon “Behind the Sky” An interesting quintet date featuring Tom Harrell. I have become quite amazed at how Harrell can fit into so many configurations of jazz. It’s cold enough up here this morning. . . but this cover picture made me put on a sweater. Rabshakeh
Junji Hirose – Solo Saxophone (1980) I'd love to know whether Hirose had heard Evan Parker at this point. Was this influence or convergence?

Denny Zeitlin told me that there was around another full CD's worth of unissued music worthy of release. Sadly, the original LP has only been reissued in Japan, though I snapped it up to replaced my shopworn used LP that I bought some time in the 1970s. I'm intrigued by the EP reference I think I picked him up as a reference in that Soejima book. He was part of the second generation of free jazz types. Solo saxophone and the EP comparison is clear, but there are significant differences in style. It is on YouTube I think. Now on: Sil Austin - Red Prysock – Battle Royal! jazzbo
Paul Horn “Something Blue” HiFi Jazz, HDTT cdr
jazzbo
As I sometimes do I followed "Something Blue" with Miles Davis "Kind of Blue." There is so much too this recording, so many times it reveals something new. This time through I was struck by an aspect of the engineering--how whenever one of the horns solos the entrance is boosted, exciting and attention grabbing. Especially Miles--his entrances are so projecting and tonally full. The engineering also reveals how integral I think to the album was Paul's bass playing. He was such a master, especially during this year imo. This time I'm listening to Sony SRCS 9104.
