a Special edition From the Los Angeles Jazz Institute

We just announced a special Members Only CD collection to raise money
for the Jazz Institute. It’s a multi-disc limited edition of only 100
sets. Over half are gone so act quickly if interested.
The source material comes from the Howard Rumsey archive features all
the music from the original Cecil Charles Spiller master tapes. As a
surprise bonus, Don Dean was there that evening and recorded quite a bit
of music that didn’t part of the the Spiller tapes.

It’s as close as we can get to experiencing the excitement of a Sunday
at the Lighthouse circa 1953!

Announcing Our First Deluxe Members Only Collection

The Complete Crazy Sunday at The Lighthouse
featuring Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars and Special Guests

September 13, 1953
Close to 10 hours of music on a multi-disc collection
plus booklet including rare photos and memorabilia

September 13 was the first Sunday with the new group of All-Stars that
had replaced Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Giuffre, Frank Patchen and Shelly Manne.

The “new” All-Stars led by Howard Rumsey were:
Rolf Ericson,
Bud Shank
Bob Cooper
Claude Williamson
Max Roach
But that day was special and now legendary because several guests sat in
including:
Miles Davis
Chet Baker
Herb Geller
Russ Freeman
Jimmy Giuffre
Lorraine Geller
Shelly Manne
Milt Bernhart

Experience a full Sunday marathon jam session at the Lighthouse
All but a little over an hour are unissued and uncirculated and will be
heard here for the first time.
Only 100 sets being produced which will all be numbered. It’s a true
limited edition designed as a fundraiser for the Jazz Institute.

$125 membership/donation

It’s a great set for anybody who harbors more than a passing interest in West Coast jazz, with quite a cast of musicians passing through in a single day and night.  I’ve listened to the first two discs on past Sundays and will be giving disc 3 a spin this weekend.

“Rique Pantoja & Chet Baker” WEA Latina cd

Bass – Sizão Machado
Drums – Bob Wyatt
Piano, Synthesizer – Rique Pantoja
Trumpet, Vocals – Chet Baker

Recorded in Rome in 1984, Rio in 1985 and São Paulo in 1987.

An early cd that I haven’t played in a long time. Sounds nice for this rainy chill morning.

Andre 3000 - New Blue Sun

Andre 3000's jazz flute record. More like new age EWI record, to be honest.

I listened to some this morning and liked it. Agree, it's not Jazz but does have Carlos Niño, Nate Mercereau and Surya Botofasina, all of whom I enjoy,  playing on it so fits very easily into that west coast scene

And it's already generated some real Jazz flute posts on X

That's the one thing I miss about twitter. If there are any good lists please repost (I recall we have a jazz flute thread somewhere), as I'm a big fan.

I'm pretty underwhelmed. I'd rather just listen to Paul Winter. It does fit with the west coast scene, as you say, but it's always seemed like the weakest of all the current jazz scenes.

What I do like is the fact that a hip hop a lister dropping a jazz EWI record no longer even causes eye lids to bat.

I knew nothing of this.

But it got a writeup today on Bloomberg News, of all places.🤣 I subscribe to Bloomberg for news, esp. financial.

BTW, check the author's CV: A.D. Carson is an associate professor of hip-hop and the Global South at the University of Virginia. His albums include "V: Illicit" and the academically peer-reviewed "I Used to Love to Dream."

Got this yesterday, I'm very impressed

Sorey's playing a piano solo gig tomorrow which I hope to get to

It was wonderful getting to see this trio (different bassist) at the Village Vanguard a couple weeks ago.

Isn't it with Pat Thomas?

That's the evening gig. He is also doing a piano solo at 4pm
