jazzbo Posted November 5, 2023 Report Posted November 5, 2023 I’m playing this one again, the second disc. I especially like the pizzicato sections. Hard to believe “These are Soulful Days” is his first composition for strings. James Brandon Lewis “For Mahalia, with Love” Quote
jazzbo Posted November 6, 2023 Report Posted November 6, 2023 I’d love to have one of those Barney Kessel Gibsons! This is one funky disc. Boogaloo Joe Jones “Right on Brother” Prestige RVG Series Japan cd Charles Earland! RUSTY BRYANT! Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted November 6, 2023 Report Posted November 6, 2023 (edited) I had both of these on lp and sold them to finance my AEC box - I made cdrs of the vinyl and wonder if this issue is derived from "needle drops". FWIW, my discs combined time out over 80 minutes. Edited November 6, 2023 by Chuck Nessa Quote

jazzbo Posted November 6, 2023 Report Posted November 6, 2023 As I didn’t get to complete the listening of this last evening (phone call . . . I’m beginning to hate phones again) . . . I’m re-listening. 992×892 138 KB A good thing. This is setting a nice tone for the morning. Quote
Pim Posted November 6, 2023 Report Posted November 6, 2023 i think this record proves that Elmo Hope is not a pianist to play in the background. Like for example Herbie Nichols he is an attention demanding pianist without playing really out. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 6, 2023 Report Posted November 6, 2023 (edited) Byas is in top form here. Three complete sessions, only one alternate take missing. Great sound. Edited November 6, 2023 by mikeweil Quote

Sound quality is plenty good enough, though I think it may be needle drops (but if so, from high quality vinyl). That company (M.I.G.) has put out some really nice releases over the past couple of years, including a "Gary Bartz NTU Troop LIve at Bremen 1975" 2CD set which is the best Bartz I've ever heard. Also an excellent Marion Brown Live in Bremen 1969 2CD set from earlier this year, and other interesting Bremen releases. Quote
