Starting the morning off with something diffferent that I haven’t heard for a while. This edition has a hi-res verson on DVD that sounds great, but my main system doesn’t play DVD (my other two systems do) so. . .here’s the excellent sounding cd version.

JOHN COLTRANE - FIRST GIANT STEPS

This one really is interesting. Hearing Coltrane play like Johnny Hodges in the Navy, and then heading Coltrane playing some honking R&B with Hodges himself ten years later.

Anita O’Day (with the Gary McFarland Orchestra “All the Sad Young Men” Verve

I’m listening to this session in the O’Day Verve Mosaic box. I’m fascinated with McFarland’s arranging and his music in general. This is a good pairing.
