Duke Ellington "The Private Collection, Vol. 3--Studio Sessions, New York 1962"MS03ODk3LmpwZWc.jpeg

Lots of great Gonsalves

I forgot how cool the arrangement and performance of "Monk's Dream" is and the great one-two punch of that and "Frere Monk."

Saw someone else listing this as being played and darned if I didn’t want to join in.

I was interrupted shortly into this one, so I’m repeating it.

OMG I forgot how awesome the two takes of "Old Folks," duets by Gordon with NHOP, are on this disc. Just Dexter at his best and NHOP gives him everything he needs.

Sasha Dobson With The Chris Byars Octet “The Darkling Thrush” Smalls Records

There’s something a little offbeat about this release. I like off beat. She reminds me of Anita O’Day a bit. The arrangements are sort of . . . out of time. Elements of early 'sixties/late 'fifties, elements of now. I’ve liked Byers on other leader and sideman dates, and the recording is interesting. This has sat on the shelf a long time.
