Rabshakeh
Woody Herman (And The Herd) – At Carnegie Hall, 1946 This one is fantastic. A very different Woody Herman. Pekka Pohjola – Harakka Bialoipokku(B The Magpie) I like the Finnish musicians on here but this is just instrumental prog of a very proggy type that is not my flavour. Not for me. Now moved on to: The Bureau Of Atomic Tourism – Second Law Of Thermodynamics My first listen to this more Avant one from 2013. I miss Nate Wooley's previous release schedule. A lot of the break out players from around 5 years ago seem to be putting out far fewer records these days.

mhatta
J.J. Spirits (J.J. means Japanese Jazz), led by Masahiko Togashi in his later years, was an interesting unit. The first and second albums were called Plays Be Bop Vol. 1 & 2 and played standard numbers in orthodox 4-beat jazz (a big challenge for Togashi, who was paralyzed in the lower half of his body), but this third album featured live performances of only the members' own compositions in a freer manner. Pianist Masahiko Sato's early compositions "Palladium" and "Scrollin'" are performed again. Edited September 6, 2023 by mhatta

I shall be definitely investigating although they don't appear on Tidal so will have to look elsewhere Is this album the same as the 'Live At The Pit Inn'? I can't find it on Discogs Edited September 6, 2023 by mjazzg

Great his recordings with Eddie Costa playing that very percussive piano with his left hand. Was also in touch with the author of this fine discography compiling coverart and Down Beat articles. jazzbo
Count Basie's first recording for Pablo Records, a jam that is interesting in that Irving Ashby of Nat Cole Trio fame is on board. Great horn players too. And the Count plays organ as well as piano. Count Basie - organ, piano Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - tenor saxophone Zoot Sims J.J. Johnson - trombone Harry "Sweets" Edison - trumpet Irving Ashby - guitar Ray Brown - double bass Louie Bellson - drums
Rabshakeh
Leni Stern – Clairvoyant (Passport, 1986) It strikes me that it is actually quite rare to have straight ahead jazz records that sound authentically "1980s" in the way that rock records do. I mean records like this or Steps Ahead's releases. It is quite a different production style to the more famous neo-bopper records on Columbia etc. Edited September 6, 2023 by Rabshakeh

jazzbo
I could wish this concert was better recorded, but I’m happy that it sounds better on this Octave/Mack Records cd than an earlier cd and the LP i had–due I bet in large part to the use of the Plangent Process. I think this is the last live concert of Garner’s recorded and released. And it sure is a good one. Rabshakeh
Benny Carter – Sax A La Carter! With these swing records you never really know whether it is going to be a blues jam or something that really sparkles. Others might disagree with me but this really seems to be right up there in the great small group swing records. It's a real shame it has a lame name and a terrible cover.
