This one you can certainly identify the soloists. Still many of the same issues with not really swinging though, but I quite enjoyed this one.

I see many who think this second volume (a “Lost Session”) is inferior to the released “Blue Hour” . . . but I like it nearly as much.

Its a good one I like very much from the beginning. Good songs and nice melodies.

Just hit me recently. I want the colour and complexity of big band charts at the moment. Don't know why.

Edit: I should add that all the Kenton today has made me more unpopular with my partner than months of Arthur Doyle and Albert Ayler could have done.

Depending on my mood, I sometimes like this second batch of tunes more. The released "Blue Hour" is excellent late night blues to wind down with. It can be a bit sleepy if the mood doesn't fit.

One of the true  "classics" with Woody. Have the original Capitol vinyl.  BTW beside Kenton Woody is a great part of my total big band stock. Other great examples are Shorty Rogers, Buddy Rich, Bob Florence, Basie & Duke. Cant name them all but big band is a fine  cathegory  of jazz for me.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers “Gypsy Folk Tales” Roulette Japan SHM-CD

 

Has that 'seventies jazz recording sound, but it’s definitely a Jazz Messengers album! Sound is much clearer here than on a previous European 2 cd set I had of the Roulette material.
