rostasi
HEY! Looky here! After Delmark's 70 years and over twelve thousand recordings later, we get an "anthology" of 10 tunes on a single disc. YIPPEE! My show dedicated to Chris Strachwitz was nearly three times longer than this.

I like his first album, this one, the omnipresent "Blues Walk" (for easy listening) and his sideman playing with Cliff Brown and Art Blakey and the Jimmy Smith date with also Blakey, Mobley, Donald Bird. Many others seem to be outright smooth to me with lesser interesting drummers, or tons of albums with organ...

HutchFan
Now: KD's best? I think so. Last night: Disc 1: Such a superb compilation. It's terrific to hear Louis in so many contexts -- with different bands (King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Fletcher Henderson, his own Hot Five) and backing various singers (Maggie Jones, Bessie Smith, "Chippie" Hill). . . . Armstrong's comprehensive sets are essential, of course. But I feel like the variety here makes for an experience that's more like spinning a (big!) stack of 78s. 4 hours ago, BillF said: Hawes at the top of his game!
