Coleman Hawkins - On Broadway (Prestige, rec. 1962)
with Tommy Flanagan (p), Major Holley (b), and Eddie Locke (d)

This CD compiles music originally released on two Moodsville LPs: Good Old Broadway and Coleman Hawkins Plays Make Someone Happy from Do Re Mi.  The disc also includes two (of nine) cuts from The Jazz Version of No Strings.

I love this stuff.  In this mellow Moodsville context, Hawkins' extraordinary SOUND -- authoritative and gruffly refined -- commands center stage.  Flanagan's lithe, graceful lines contrast perfectly.

I love that band behind Hawkins at that time.

Right now

Chet Baker Trio “Live in Paris” Elemental Music 2 cd set.

Revisiting this one . . . quite good performances from Chet. And sound is decent, especially good trumpet sound.

Ms. TTK is having to work today, it is now summer, so I am mixing rum cocktails and spinning exotica.  Here is my playlist:

  • Phil Moore - Polynesian Paradise - Strand (stereo)
  • John McFarland - Provocatif - UA (stereo)

Reminds me of seeing them at Fairfield Halls, Croydon circa 1980. Monkman was in the lineup I think. The only time I have seen John Williams live.

In terms of the quality of music contained, this is one of the most revelatory of Mosaic sets I think. Phenomenal. Once you can get round the use of Bauer’s wire recorder on some of the tracks. Lennie T. Has been sorely under-rated.

I like these LA Express records. Good fun.

Imagine my surprise to walk into Tower Records, Santa Monica to find Scott and co. doing a free live appearance to promote their latest CD. Scott was friendly, bought the CD. Good times !

It might depend on when in '80 you saw them.
Monkman left in the fall of '80 and was replaced by Steve Gray.

Included his two bands, Curved Air and Sky along with his 801 "Live" gig
in an upcoming show that I just finished up.

Sunday morning listening... more eaze - Eternity
