I have several versions of this, and decided to play this one today. . . though this is not the best recording, with wonky stereo artifacts, the music is outstanding. Cannonball plays two awesome solos here. From the music it is quite similar to another live recording from Newport, also with Trane and Cannonball. I think I remember that Miles is barely audible on one track, maybe it was "If I Were A Bell". Maybe this is a sacrilege what I say now but from the saxophone I always have been listening mostly to Trane. Somehow Cannonball in that context didn´t get to me the same way Trane does. I don´t know what it is what I don´t like so much about Cannonballs alto style, he is a topnotch player and all, but....... (?). I think in my case I would have liked to hear that sextet with Jackie McLean on alto. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 Oh my. Big Cannonball fan here and so glad he was in this sextet at that time. Quote

HutchFan Posted May 22, 2023 Report Posted May 22, 2023 Shifting gears and locales -- from New Orleans to the Moers Festival: Yamashita Trio - Clay (Enja, rec. 1974) with Akira Sakata and Takeo Moriyama It's astonishing that three people can make so much music that they sound like an entire orchestra. How did I come to miss Rollins? But I did manage to get there for Webster, Dexter, Griffin and Mobley. Edited May 22, 2023 by BillF Quote
