HutchFan Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 More Japanese jazz: Takashi Kako - Legend of the Sea-Myself (Trio, 1977) with Masami Nakagawa (as, fl); Keiki Midorikawa (b, vc); Masahiko Togashi (perc); and Kenji Murata (vo, 1 trk only) This is ECM-like music in the sense that it's obviously influenced by 20th c. European art/classical music. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 Allen Lowe and the Constant Sorrow Orchestra “In the Dark” disc 2 (of 3) ESP DISK cd. VERY GOOD music. Quote

Time for a listen, thanks for posting @HutchFan I have a Midorikawa that's been top of my wantlist for ages Quote
mikeweil Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 (edited) This album is from 1998. Their trumpet player. Raudel Marzal Torres, an excellent player, now lives in Berlin. I was introduced to him by a mutual friend and old percussion buddy a few years ago, and during our two weeks trip to Berlin in late March had an opportunity to talk to him at length. He is now a member of Juan Marcos Gonzalez' Afro-Cuban All Stars off and on and will tour this summer with the Euro-Cuban All Stars, a Slovenian-Cuban joint venture. HutchFan Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 I really enjoy the voice of A. Grace Lee Mims on this album. Her sound reminds me of Ellington vocalists like Adelaide Hall ("Creole Love Call") or Kay Davis ("On a Turquoise Cloud"). Not a typical "jazz voice"--but also not unprecedented. Quote
