Jean-Michel Proust “Harlem Nocturne” cd

I discovered Proust via his two volumes “for” Barney Wilen, and really like this one. Like Yusef Lateef’s “Part of the Search” this one seems to be scanning on radio (of the past) or “Casablanca” and then landing on a tune–different ones than Lateef might–aided by a young son. Good music, well-recorded.

I'll listen to Bill Perkins any time.

Is this LP as close as Herbie Mann ever came to making an ECM record?  The music has the requisite austerity -- which is NOT a word one usually associates with Herbie Mann.  Even the cover looks like it could have been an ECM release.

Tone Poet and BN Works back to back

doug -- We all know how good the music is.  But how do the two different releases/formats compare AQ-wise?

Just curious.  ;)

I found a three-disc lot of signed Sheila Jordan CDs for $15 and this is the first one up.  I missed her by one day in New York in December and mixed up my times and missed her at the Detroit Jazz Fest in 2018 or 2019.  Despite my unfortunately poor timing on rhose two occasions, I did manage to catch a delightful talk and set wth her and Cameron Brown maybe 8 years ago.  She lit up the room (well, outdoor tent). :)

I prefer the BN Works.  It sounds more lively.  The Tone Poet is good but it's not the best in the series.

I would have thought it would be the reverse.

RE: Tone Poet LPs... With more & more listening, I've switched my opinion on that.... I used to think that these Tone Poets were giving us this great music in the best sound ever. But then I got a few "duds" and realized that those old CDs sound pretty damn good. In fact, I bet if you EQ'ed the CD version and boosted the bass, you'd probably find yourself wondering if that's all they did with these LPs.
