jazzbo
Jeri Southern “Live at the Crescendo” Capitol Japan lp facsimile cd 2022 6 minutes ago, HutchFan said: Interesting. I had no idea that there was more music from A Drum Is a Woman. That's a BIG bummer that Sony hasn't seen fit to release it. Maybe some day? Hopefully!?! I asked Michael Cuscuna some time back if we might ever see it--he said no. I surmised it was because it was a Phil Schaap production about to be launched when he was canned from Columbia. I think the additional material was likely a recording of a performance or a rehearsal.

A performance was broadcast on TV in the days before videotape and so far no one has found a Kinescope and put it out–I’d love to see it. Kinescopes of it do exist. I saw a screening of one in NY at a Duke Ellington conference a few years ago. Unfortunately none of them are in colour. 2 hours ago, Chuck Nessa said: I'm still pissed at Schaap's editing error on Such Sweet Thunder. The correct (mono) take is on a cd entitled "Ralph Ellison: Living with Music". (These 2 replies together reveal me to be a pedant.) jazzbo
“It’s so Peaceful In the Country” is a fitting song for me today. A nice change of pace. . . I haven’t listened to June with full orchestra in some time. They do great things with Wes's compositions and solos. A thorough exploration of the Montgomery oeuvre, you might say! 😄 Yes, it is a very fine recording, very enjoyable. I listened to it several times. 7 hours ago, BillF said: 👍 Now playing: That is an excellent CD. 👍 Now:

HutchFan
Now spinning a disc that just arrived in the mail yesterday: This 1994 Milestone CD is a reissue of two LPs by Brazilian guitarist Francisco Mário: Conversa de Cordas, Couros, Palhetas e Metais (1983) and Retratos (1986). Gorgeous music, comparable to Baden Powell's -- although Mário's feels a bit more folky/choro-influenced and less samba-y. I suppose this isn't "Jazz," but it's certainly a cousin -- if not a closer relative. (And the music features some heavyweights from the Brazilian jazz world, including bassist Zeca Assumpção and percussionist Djalma Correa.) Think of a Brazilian version of the band Oregon, and you'd be in the right neighborhood. Edited December 14, 2022 by HutchFan

I'll correct above. “The Complete Capitol Recordings of Woody Herman” Mosaic Records cd 2 More glorious sound. This band, like the best of the big bands, had a distinct character and charm. And though I encounter many who are not, I’m a fan of Woody’s singing.
