Grover Washington, Jr. – Soul Box Vol.1 (Kudu, 1973)

A real statement, despite being wildly uneven. I really think that kids getting into jazz get a whole lot out of this era of Washington's music. I'm still upset to see the sneers that his music receives from some areas of the jazz establishment.

I used to disregard Andy Shppard, but no, having listened to a sort of Carl Bley immersion, it seems that he has become a Charlie rouse to a Carla Bley Monk.

This is totally splendid quartet record, Few groups achieve this level of integration.

I'm with you on this. The penny dropped for me when I heard the Trios album.

Yusef Lateef - Hush 'N' Thunder (Atlantic, 1972)

More powerful and strange (in the best sense) than I remember from previous listens.  It's hittin' me hard today.

Up next, more YL:

You could probably say the same thing about these Lateef albums from the Seventies.

But that's all finally being re-assessed and re-contextualized, I think.  Like my 20-something year-old son says, most (interesting) music today is postmodern and "post-genre."  So the old boundary lines that folks used to get hung up on mean even less now than they did then.

Charlie Parker And His Orchestra – Night And Day (Verve)

Strangely hard to find out who played on this one online.

I like the 8 LP French reissues "Bird On Verve" from the mid eighties. Great cover, great sound and the personnel is always listed. I still have to purchase the fifth volume.

All tracks are  from "The Genius Of Charlie Parker Vol 1"  (= Ch. Parker & His Orchestra [with strings]  are on this compilation VERVE  0251703690 Charlie Parker with strings - The Mastertakes - Order of the tracks differs from the CLEF / VERVE vinyl editions because there are more tracks on the CD.

First ever listen to this following your advocacy @Rabshakeh sounding pretty perfect for a steamy London evening

It's a mixed bag, but some of it is great. Just a strange sprawling statement for something released on Kudu.
