Niko Posted April 1, 2022 Report Posted April 1, 2022 just got the new Bird in LA double cd and immediately noted a weird typo that seems consistent throughout the liner notes... bassist David Bryant (later with Horace Tapscott) is called "David Bailey", even when citing his recollections of Bird in the Central Avenue Sounds book... implying that whoever first wrote the text still knew the name - otherwise they wouldn't have found his recollections... and then at some point in the production process someone decided that having Clora Bryant in there was enough Bryants so David had to become a Bailey... JSngry Posted April 3, 2022 Author Report Posted April 3, 2022 The band is too often too big for the orchestrations, the takes are too long. and the ensemble lacks a distinct color/personality. It reminds me of a "lab band" except with real people doing the playing, not lab rats. None of which is what I take delight in about damn near every other Carla Bley record. Go figure. I will say that Lew Soloff & Gary Valente are doin' the do (just doin' it to). Quote
