Rabshakeh Posted January 30, 2022 Report Posted January 30, 2022 Anthony Braxton / Gunter Hampel / Jeanne Lee - Familie (Birth, 1972) Just finished washing up after a toddler “play date” (hangover incoming), and this one sounds just great. Quote

It is possible that I don´t have all Milestones, since especially in the early 90´s a didn´t have much time for music, I was doin a second job to my main job, was fallin in love with the girl who became my wife.... Now I´m listening more to the live albums, but this here sure is fine, ballads I suppose. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Another volume of the excellent Adventure Records series "Piano Jazz Masters" -- Benjamin Tabakin. I love solo jazz piano and this has that Brazilian spice as well. Excellently recorded. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Rahsaan Roland Kirk "Rahsaan Rahsaan" WEA Japan cd This 1970 recording has raps from Rahsaan that are still relevant today. And some fun and moving music throughout. Quote

jazzbo Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Dexter Gordon "The Montmartre Collection" disc 2, Black Lion/Muzak Japan It's amazing how good these reissues of Black Lion material sound. Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2022 Author Report Posted January 31, 2022 Deceptively small band and small playing that is totally locked in. Chico was a master at that, of getting the full by eliminating the clutter. Quote

HutchFan Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 David "Fathead" Newman - House of David (Atlantic, 1967) as heard on this 32 Jazz set: Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2022 Author Report Posted January 31, 2022 Quiet as it's kept(?) the trio of Chico, Cary DeNigris, and Paul Ramsey was tighter than the proverbial gnat's ass. In the end, Chico records are GROOVE records, no matter what else is (or isn't) going on on top. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Coleman Hawkins "Good Old Broadway" Moodsville/JVC XRCD Another excellent session recorded with Flanagan, Holley and Locke. Quote
Dub Modal Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Joining in on Chico with this one: Paul Ramsey, Andrew Hadro, Evan Scwam, Cary DeNigris, Jeremy Carlstedt, George Bohanon, and Fontella Bass round out the crew. Recorded in 2005 with one track from 2000. Released in 2006. Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2022 Author Report Posted January 31, 2022 Paul Ramsey holds a pocket like an upright player on the straight-ahead stuff plus is TOTALLY on the one for funk beats. Hella fine player, hope he is alive and, if so, well. These Chico records sound and feel like "small club" music. No sense in doing ginormous festival venues or shit like that, go like back in the day with neon lights on the wall (and some of them being beer brands), low ceilings, tables right up on the edge of the bandstand, maybe a small dance floor, and don't forget to tip your waitress. That kind of vibe, like, for jazz, doesn't really exist any more. Places to go hang while you get off on some groovy (but not stupid) jazz. If you've been there, you know what I mean. and if you haven't....use your imagination and have some Champale or some Hennessey. Just show that you got style and class, even if for that moment. But you probably do, all the time. And don't forget to tip your waitress. Quote

I don't see any further credits beyond Chico's 2014 The Inquiring Mind. Quote
