Rabshakeh Posted January 4, 2022 Report Posted January 4, 2022 (edited) Troyka - Ornithophobia (2015) Semi recent fusion record. My first time with this and really enjoying it. Quite a Brainfeeder type feel but a bit less processed. It has a weird spoken word section on track five about quarantines and lock downs caused by a mysterious avian flu which is bizarre given that it is released long ago, back in The Before. Rabshakeh Posted January 5, 2022 Report Posted January 5, 2022 GoGo Penguin - A Humdrum Star (Blue Note 2018) This really is "jazz" as brand name rather than genre. Some good stuff pokes through occasionally, but that's it. Quote

Exciting though, for one sitting. Haven't bothered with the last couple of albums, maybe I'd be surprised Jazz Not Jazz? Not that that matters dreadfully Quote

I just meant that this is a jazz record in the same way that Nirvana Unplugged is a 'folk' record. I agree that GoGo Penguin is actually okay. Too heavy on the repetitive cinematic piano and 'real instruments' hip-hop loops tropes, but the bits where the bass gets in there are pretty good. I like how Manchester seems to be positioning itself as a sort of jazz scene equivalent to 1990s Bristol. Quote

It may have damaged their income, but judging from this album it left their jazz talents untouched. Really enjoying this. I liked the cover photo so thought I'd give a spin No names I know.
