Rabshakeh Posted October 14, 2021 Report Posted October 14, 2021 Steve Beresford, Toshinori Kondo, Dave Toop and Tristan Honsiger - Imitation of Life (Y, 1981) My favourite of the second free improv gen's records. It's amazing how similar it is to other groups with no lineal connection to this music, whether the Holy Modal Rounders, Sebadoh or the Residents. It's a total desecration. Quote
Dub Modal Posted October 14, 2021 Report Posted October 14, 2021 Wow, this album smokes! Frank Foster, Pepper Adams, Jan Hammer, Gene Perla, Cornell Dupree, Warren Smith, Steve Grossman, Candido and Pablo on percussion, and Omar Clay. They fade out the track Currents/Pollen unfortunately but that's the only negative I have about this one. Quote

Looks very good. This is different than the Peacock Lane date, right? (which I believe was recorded in 1957). Quote
Gheorghe Posted October 15, 2021 Report Posted October 15, 2021 I love it. It was one of the favourite of us during those times in the 70´s. It still sounds so fantastic, I never get tired of it. And really a dream team, Freddie, Joe Henderson, Herbie, Ron, Lenny White. Quote

Fantasy sometimes did that, or left off a track, but always noted this. Not on the back liner of this CD. Mike, I posted an Earland discography here some years ago in which I'm SURE I noted this. Ah, timing is everything. Earlier Conjunto Matamoros with Beny More - RCA Victor (Tumbao) 1946 Now Osdalgia Lemnes - Contigo live - Mimisma Productions One of the great voices of this century, I'm sure. Next Nemours Jean-Baptiste - Musical tour of Haiti - Ansonia 1960 MG Quote

But IMO its the same as the Peacock lane CD from Freshsound (FSCD-1016) which has listed as recording date December 1956 Edited October 15, 2021 by jazzcorner Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 15, 2021 Report Posted October 15, 2021 Nat Birchall - Ancient Africa (2021) I'm not the biggest Birchall fan but I enjoyed this. Retro genre work, but the genre is A Love Supreme, rather than Relaxin' or Moanin'. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 15, 2021 Report Posted October 15, 2021 Hideo Shiraki - In Fiesta (Teichiku, 1961) Having just finished: Matana Roberts - The Chicago Project (Central Control, 2007) Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 15, 2021 Report Posted October 15, 2021 Old and New Dreams - Old and New Dreams (ECM, 1979) I started listening to jazz in the late 1990s, when the "ECM sound" was definitely too much of a thing. I can't imagine how it must have felt to have bought a record like this one when it came out, and suddenly be transported for the first time into a sound world/production that was so crisp you could almost see under Charlie Haden's fingernails or count each individual droplet on the bell of Don Cherry's trumpet.
