jazzbo Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Barney Wilen "La Note Bleue" 2 cd set, disc 1 (the original album) I just love Barney Wilen's sound on any saxophone. He brings out the beauty of the instrument and his playing seems to combine the fleet foot of Lester Young with the thematic surety of Sonny Rollins. I have bought everything I can of his work. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Lucky Thompson / Gigi Gryce in Paris (BMG; originally Disques Vogue) Thompson plays exquisitely on these 1956 recordings.  Quote

JSngry Posted October 1, 2021 Author Report Posted October 1, 2021 Â Guitar as percussion. Dave dudley had shitty time but a great voice. That's why there are studio players -Â to make great records in spite of the artist, wn/as needed. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 1, 2021 Report Posted October 1, 2021 Count Basie has been in heavy rotation lately -- and I can't seem to stay away from this CD in particular: I've never been to a breakfast dance. Would've been fun to be at this one!  Quote

mhatta Posted October 2, 2021 Report Posted October 2, 2021 Today I re-listened to Kenny Drew. Drew (& Jr. too) are now kinda forgotten, that's unfortunate. They are terrific pianists. This one is from '70s with awful jacket, so rightfully overlooked. That's also unfortunate, too.  Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 2, 2021 Report Posted October 2, 2021 George Benson/Jack McDuff (OJC/Prestige). A 1977 Prestige two-fer of "The New Boss Guitar Of George Benson" coupled with "Hot Barbeque" that would appear to have been designed to capitalize on Benson's recent popularity. While the Benson date has been issued as a standalone CD in the OJC series, this is the only way to get "Hot Barbeque" on CD unless you get one of the harder-to-find Japanese CDs. Quote
