HutchFan Posted August 21, 2021 Report Posted August 21, 2021 I've decided that I'm going to have "A Day of Diz" -- nothing but Gillespie all day long.   Now spinning: The first disc captures the band in 1968 and the second disc is from 1962. As usual, the LRC packaging is shoddy and careless -- but the music is terrific, especially the 1968 set.  If you want to hear an example of James Moody's flute mastery, give this a listen:  13 minutes ago, mikeweil said: Primo Burrell.   Quote

Rabshakeh Posted August 21, 2021 Report Posted August 21, 2021 (edited) Pyramids - Lalibela (1973) Trying this one again, given the heavy retrospective hype Pyramids seems to be receiving from the Spiritual Jazz Inc. Marketing machine. I'm still not convinced. Edited August 21, 2021 by Rabshakeh Quote

It's a bit messy but has an atmosphere. Gardens was quite an early purchase for me so it's held dear. now on something somewhat different. I was hoping it would be a bit more noir than it is Quote

I got a better noir hit off the Mundell Lowe record. I'm currently on Lester Bowie's New York Organ Ensemble - The Organizer (DIW, 1991) Quote

Agreed on that. He was still on drums I think in a Gillespie Reunion/Tribute Big Band I saw in the 90s but will have to check. As was Billy Root  !
