jazzbo Posted June 2, 2021 Report Posted June 2, 2021 Barney Wilen "Passione" Venus cd Barney Wilen "Passione" Venus cd. I love Barney. I'm not a great fan of the Venus Records sound but this is not the worst example. In parts it reminds me of the work of Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano together (years later) as Enrico Rava is a real partner here and the arrangements are inventive. And having the lovely Marie Moor on the covers is not a bad thing. Then on to: Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia featuring Sabrina Malheiros "The Wave" Perfect for this morning, beautifully recorded Brazilian jazz. Quote

I have two fantastic albums by him: one Dom Salvador, which is a simple, but very good trio affair, and the other, from his bigger band Abolicao, Dom Salvador e Abolicao - Som, sangue e raca. Both are terrific. The second with its undertones of race claims. From the early 70s. 2 hours ago, jazzbo said: Alex Malheiros & Banda Utopia featuring Sabrina Malheiros "The Wave" Perfect for this morning, beautifully recorded Brazilian jazz. I knew Alex Malheiros must have something to do with Azymuth. And I looked it up, and actually, he was the bassist. Quote

Yes sir! So true. Both playing- AND composition-wise. And Buster blends so well with Rouse... Quote
jazzbo Posted June 2, 2021 Report Posted June 2, 2021 Chick Corea "Circulus" Blue Note Japan cd I'm not sure my dachshund Fiona is a fan of this abstract intellectual jazz. On toYusef Lateef "Lost in Sound" Charlie Parker/Solid Records Japan cd This is more to her liking; she settled down into a nice nap. I have a funny history with the LP version of this material. Back in the early 'seventies I bought a Chartlie Parker LP on Charlie Parker Records and was mystified at what I heard. . . tenor, that didn't sound like Bird, and stereo. . . .rather mysterious, I knew it wasn't Parker, but I liked it. In time I did some detective work and discovered that it was "Lost in Sound." I figured out it was Lateef first when I bought his two LP reissue set of Impulse material on ABC Records. Quote

Sabrina Malheiros "Dreaming" I could have been fooled into thinking that several of these tracks were performed by Monday Michiru. That's a good thing. Edited June 2, 2021 by jazzbo Quote
sidewinder Posted June 2, 2021 Report Posted June 2, 2021 Remember seeing Tony’s band playing this material, a fine and spirited Monk tribute. Quote
