JSngry Posted May 26, 2021 Author Report Posted May 26, 2021 Quaint, actually. 1979, this band...heard them live bought the records in real time, etc. 40+ years later, people still playing like this, not moving any goalposts, or even trying to....seems quaint now to listen to this, from then, and think about this was going to be some new exciting "mainstream"....i guess there is no such thing, realistically, kind of an oxymoron, really. But on its own terms, hey helluva good band, and more than capable of friskyivity! Quote
mjazzg Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 definitely frisky, but you'd expect nothing else Quote

sidewinder Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) The Fresh Sound reissue with bonus tracks. Great sound - at least as good as my Time vinyl. 35 minutes ago, BillF said: Saw them when they reached Ronnie Scott's. They were fantastic - and I was back the next night for a repeat. Might have been a different tour you witnessed though. On reflection, the group I saw was the later one with Turre and Mulgrew Miller. Remember chatting to people at those gigs who had flown in from the Continent to see it ! Yes, mine was with the guys on the Onkel Pö gig. Perhaps it was an off night. They do happen! Similarly dead at Scott's was the night I saw Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine, but the Horace Silver Quintet with the Brecker brothers and Billy Cobham at the same venue really burned the place up. 45 minutes ago, John Tapscott said: For sure. Yes, "Segue in C" is the track I always remember. Yes, that would make sense. Reminds me of catching McCoy Tyner there. One night with mid-sized group was just about the best gig I ever saw. Some years later with the Trio was so-so. Never saw Horace at Scott’s, alas. I was always out of town or doing other stuff when he was doing his annual week. The first time I saw Phil Woods with the group with Hal Crook and Jim McNeely (not in the UK) was pretty good. Edited May 26, 2021 by sidewinder Quote

Peter Friedman Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 With: Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Ramsey Lewis, George Morrow. This is the only time I recall Ramsey Lewis on a Hard Bop session. At first it seemed as if it would be a very strange fit, but he actually sounded quite good in this setting. Quote

Lewis plays very well, and the whole album is very enjoyable. Quote
