He's also on a Five Blokes on Ogun Yeah, agree about those. I had forgotten he was on the Hawkins. I really need to revisit that, it was a favourite when it was released Just stumbled across this looking for something else - but yes! He's really an incredible clarinettist/bass clarinettist...for the latter, he also plays on this one: https://babel-label.bandcamp.com/album/step-wide-step-deep (the same sextet as on Unit[e])! duaneiac
While this CD won't rock anybody's world, it is an enjoyable listening experience. I suppose one's enjoyment of this disc would depend upon one's view of Jon Faddis -- whether he be a disciple or an imitator of Dizzy Gillespie. Simon8
23 hours ago, JSngry said: This record fascinates me, especially the ballads (and "Cousins", which is really "How Long Has This Been Going On"). And Pete LaRoca!!!!!!!!! Shared fascination here! I have the "incomplete" Savoy original CD (without the ballads variations, "Circle With The Hole..." and, especially, "Stereophrenic", great cut. Should track down this "complete" edition...). Liked what Steve Swallow recently had to say about the date (https://jazztimes.com/features/columns/steve-swallow-pete-la-roca/): Paul Bley, Footloose! (Savoy, 1963) — “Paul and I had been playing that repertoire extensively as a duo for several months. I got Pete on the date and ended up being the musical interlocutor between Paul and Pete. Pete was upholding the value of swing, while Paul was straining at those boundaries, even though he could get a merciless groove going if so inclined. There was wonderful electricity in the air; I love that record.” Edited May 23, 2021 by Simon8 typo
