uh....

The opening cut is really nifty, an orchestral piece both composed and orchestrated by Tony. That he did the orchestration is what caught my eye, because...Tony was a study-er, and his work on this is not that of a beginner or a dabbler. Composition, yes, there had been that, but orchestration is a whole other skill. Would have loved it if he had lived longer and developed/presented that side of his talent, I bet there would have been something there worth hearing.

Otherwise, some nice enough things, but it's got that evil tinniness of unevolved digital to it. That, and Michael Brecker. Either way pretty heavy load for me that I can only sometimes make with this one. But that orchestra piece is totally wonderful.

Listening to Sonny's Reel Life makes me feel good -- like the sun on your skin on a summer day.  (The cover image reinforces this vibe: The sky is blue! The day is bright!)  Sure, there are some not-so-subtle production touches that shout, "It's the 1980s!" -- but I don't care. Sonny sounds so damn good that his horn carries all before him.  The Jack DeJohnette-Bob Cranshaw hook-up works really well too.

So, yeah, I like this one. 😉
