JSngry Posted April 1, 2021 Author Report Posted April 1, 2021 Between Argo & Prestige, Jacquet made some really good records in the 1960s, whatever that is supposed to mean...he almost always made really good records. On this one, Barry Harris' comp is a delight, putting that bebop stab in there, it works. Quote
JSngry Posted April 1, 2021 Author Report Posted April 1, 2021 What's wrong with me that first I hear this record and think it's an offshoot/outgrowth of Odyssey Of Iska or some such, and THEN I hear the differences? Ari Brown working the side keys, though. Wayne never did that, at least not like this! Besides, hey, Wayne's still there (hell, HERE!), it's not like Odyssey has gotten pimped out beyond all redeemable value, not yet, not by a long shot. Quote

This is one of the best crossover records I have heard (from the jazz side). A good recommendation. Thanks. Quote

Ari Brown makes it for me, and Gerald Cleaver, too. It does bug me that I can here such obviously fine playing and my ears immediately trace it back to some pretty clear antecedents. Wish I could stop doing that, at least sometimes... But yes, I did like it. Quote

JSngry Posted April 2, 2021 Author Report Posted April 2, 2021 Chet Baker did not need to be on this record, but he was, guess he "had" to be on it because it was his date. But...they get along without him very well. 8 hours ago, HutchFan said: That's a good record. Quote

JSngry Posted April 2, 2021 Author Report Posted April 2, 2021 In 1957, you get these guys together, you make a record, it's good, everybody's on the same page (although wtf? was Thigpen doing with that bobbydurhamshit behind Al Cohn at one point?). In as little as 3-5 years later...wouldn't happen, would it. You might get a hint that people were looking to move on by Waldron answering "What's New" with "What's Not" and McKusick countering "Woody 'n You" with "I Wouldn't". But that might be reading too much into it. Anyway, a wonderful snapshot of a very moving object. Â Quote
