JSngry Posted February 24, 2021 Author Report Posted February 24, 2021 Stuff Smith works when coffee doesn't! But Barney Kessell gets shafted in the personnel listings, which is a shame because he really brought it to this one! Quote
BillF Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 Haven't listened to this one in a long time. First heard it a few years after its original release. Knew that Riverside intended it as a gentle introduction to the then-thought-to-be-far-out Monk, having him play a set of show tunes. Only now do I realise that many of them are on the same changes as his then-thought-to-be-too-difficult compositions, e.g "Just You, Just Me"/"Evidence". Quote
jazzbo Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 This one again. Their interpretations of Coleman works are very interesting to hear with piano, vibes and four horns. SFJazz Collective Inaugral Season Live 2004, disc 1 Original Compositions and Works of Ornette Coleman Quote

Simon8 Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021   Fun to hear back to back these driving, bottom-heavy sessions that share a common "inner" quartet (McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, James Spaulding & Howard Johnson). Quote

jazzbo Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 On another board we had an interesting discussion about bossa nova and jazz. Some were maintaining bossa nova was jazz, others that it wasn't. I'm in the camp that it's not jazz, something else, but some very jazzy bossa nova happens and I love it. This is one of those recordings. I'm reaching for it lately--it delivers as bossa nova when I have that frequent itch, and there's some great jazz-sounding guitar and "flavor," and the recording is very very good.
