It was recorded in 1968 by which time Hawes had modified his style considerably. For me the classics remain the three Contemporary 1955-56 albums: Quote

Gheorghe Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 Very nice and really an allstar thing with Freddie Hubbard, James Spaulding and Joe Henderson. Quote

The album on Black Lion is a strong favorite, but I may slightly prefer this one on MPS/SABA. The 3 early albums on Contemporary are certainly very good, but I find he digs in a bit deeper on the Black Lion and MPS sessions. Quote

Whoa, Strozier with a big band! Sign me up. Now playing: For Hawes-led sessions, I only have this, For Real! and a short session from a Savoy compilation. I need to pick up more because he was a brilliant pianist. Given my love for Roy Haynes and Cecil McBee, the Jazz Showcase album would be a logical choice. Quote

The only downside is less than ideal audio fidelity. Edited November 26, 2020 by HutchFan Quote
