JSngry Posted June 26, 2020 Author Report Posted June 26, 2020 Some of this is really interesting, some of this is really not interesting. No matter, this Alan Sondheim guy has certainly gone forward with many different things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Sondheim  1 hour ago, Peter Friedman said: Cover is misleading. There is no harp on this CD. The trio is piano , guitar, and bass.  I also don't see any bed or any cigarettes, just a trio of a harp, a chair, and a harpist (is that Eddie Higgins?). Total botch-job. Quote
HutchFan Posted June 26, 2020 Report Posted June 26, 2020 (edited) Oh man. I love this stuff so much. It's like Buster's sayin' to the band, "Just climb on my back. I'll carry every one of y'all!"  Edited June 26, 2020 by HutchFan Quote
Peter Friedman Posted June 26, 2020 Report Posted June 26, 2020 Pulled this one to listen to more from pianist Wade Legge. He only plays on 2 tunes, but sounds good. Though Lars Gullin is primarily known as a baritone sax player, he also plays alto sax on a number of tracks here. Quote
HutchFan Posted June 26, 2020 Report Posted June 26, 2020 (edited) CD combines two LPs: Mighty Mongo and Viva Mongo! Features a terrific band with Rolando Lozano (fl), João Donato (p), Jose "Chombo" Silva (ts), a.o. Thanks to Jim S. for hipping me to this. Some primo "Chombo" here!   Edited June 26, 2020 by HutchFan Quote
JSngry Posted June 26, 2020 Author Report Posted June 26, 2020 Good stuff all around, but those sextet sides really speak. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 27, 2020 Report Posted June 27, 2020 Thanks to Late for hipping me indirectly to this reissue (via his post about it in this thread iirc): Quote

Serial done right, with imagination, flair, and clarity of musical, not just mathematical, purpose. I can hear the math, but only as it serves the music, not the other way around. Plus, that guy sitting at his manuscript while smoking...THESE are they types of guys Stan Kenton should have been working with, LOL.  and thank you Mr. Fromm! One of the highlights from the Box for me. I wish there were more recordings though (the Sestina I mean). Apparently the original LP sold poorly, but still...  now playing ICP Orchestra,  Edited June 27, 2020 by Marzz Quote
sidewinder Posted June 27, 2020 Report Posted June 27, 2020 (edited) Artist Share Really regretting missing out on the original option with the book. This one is superb ! Edited June 27, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
JSngry Posted June 27, 2020 Author Report Posted June 27, 2020 Somebody should make a chronological compilation of Jo Jones solos on "Caravan". That might be interesting...this one has one where I looked up and thought that Chico Hamilton come up and sat in. Quote
