jazzbo
These Muzak/Japan reissues in 2 cd sets sound wonderful--I have this one and the Monk, Gordon, Griffin, Sims/Brookmeyer and Konitz. I'm debating whether to get the Jackie and Roy. Ben Webster "Saturday Night at the Montmartre" Edited June 24, 2020 by jazzbo
JSngry
Popular Favorites Played With A Touch Of Class seriously, it's a nice enough record until Peterson "improvises", which is almost always a bunch of mood-busting notejaculations. Riddle do what Riddle do, though, in a good solid B+ version (ok, A-, maybe), and when Peterson just plays the melody, more or less, it's a fine "mood" record. But that motherfucker is hellbent on busting the mood first chance he gets, unfortunately. Great pianist, excellent musician, but just a damn poor concept of what he need to do to matter. The less he plays, the better he sounds. Did nobody ever tell him that? But i like Nelson Riddle, I really do.

jazzbo
Trying this one again. I like Shabaka here but overall I really don't get into the style of these. . . .which has kept me from buying their other discs. . . so far. . . . HutchFan
This CD collects 2 LPs that were compiled from five different recording sessions, so it's a bit of a grab bag personnel-wise. Ammons, Stitt, and McDuff make it rock solid regardless.

Hmm. That does look interesting. Thanks for the heads-up, Jim. I dig Mason's organ work. He's fantastic on Rusty Bryant's LPs Fire-Eater and Wildfire. JSngry
Other than eric Alexander's indigenous cypherness and Fathead being mislabeled as being on tenor when he's clearly on alto, nothing to complain about here!

JSngry
Ok, on the whole, I prefer O'Day the "character" to O'Day the singer (but only by some, and then not by THAT much), but this is a helliva good record. for both her and Gary McFarland.
