No offense to Eric Schneider -- he seems like a perfectly fine reed player and he certainly loves Ben Webster and that is an admirable quality in any individual -- but each track where he is featured just means that much less time for Sir Charles to play. It is the same band as the Blue Note box and single disc (Steve Wilson, Bob Sheppard, Steve Davis and bassist Avishai Cohen), but with Jeff Ballard in place of Adam Cruz. It is before the Coltrane influence changed his playing. He sounds wonderful on the 2 sessions on which he appears. Elmo Hope is also in great form throughout. So many later-to-be-notable pianists passed through the ranks of Lester's little bands.
