This here has a quite exiting version of "Old Devil Moon" though on the start it sounds like if Cliff just had to "learn" the tune, but he really stretches out on solo. Cedar Waltons trio feature "The Maestro" is a beauty. Very fine descending chords on the theme, not unlikely those on Dizzy´s "Con Alma" though it´s completly different. "The Highest Mountain" also very strong. This was a great combo .... outstanding music .... Quote

HutchFan Posted March 21, 2020 Report Posted March 21, 2020 An excellent band making superb music. Quote
JSngry Posted March 21, 2020 Author Report Posted March 21, 2020 For the Groove/Teddy record, let me cut to the chase and give a link to "Pennies From Heaven", the last - and by far best (imo) cut of the album: They save the best for last. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Quote
Justin V Posted March 21, 2020 Report Posted March 21, 2020 Disc 2: This is a set that I hadn't spent much time with until last year when I picked up the Pres Verve box and the old Basie Decca box (finally!). It us becoming one of my favorite Mosaics. 'I Left My Baby' is desert-island material. Quote
HutchFan Posted March 21, 2020 Report Posted March 21, 2020 Groove Holmes with Teddy Edwards & Pat Martino. Ruby Braff. Prez!!! Some strong stuff today. 👍 Quote

It was always a highlight of gigs by Eastern Rebellion and Cedar’s trio when they played ‘The Maestro’. Bob Berg was pretty adept on the changes to that tune. Quote

Jim Duckworth Posted March 21, 2020 Report Posted March 21, 2020 i got quite a kick from listening to this yesterday, so I continued today with Joe Sullivan, Jess Stacy, and Buddy Weed. Quote
duaneiac Posted March 22, 2020 Report Posted March 22, 2020 The first concert presented here marked Lee Konitz's arrival in the band and Mr. Kenton is effusive in his praise of the saxophonist. This version of the band also included Maynard Ferguson, Conte Candoli, Richie Kamuca, Bill Holman, Frank Rosolino, Bill Russo and Sal Salvador. This is the only one of this "Concerts In Miniature" series of CDs I have. The sound is good, but not terrific. Nice but brief liner notes by Kenton scholar/biographer Michael Sparke. Stan Kenton, before giving the band the tempo on "23 Degrees N - 82 Degrees W" here: "Gentlemen -- take my beat and make it yours" Quote
