This sure sounds like a theme song in search of a movie -- sadly, the kind of movie they just don't make any more; I imagine it as a 1960's spy spoof romantic comedy and it would have starred Doris Day, Tony Curtis, Red Buttons and Vincent Price.

Arrangement by Benny Carter.

Nat Birchall Quartet "The Storyteller--The Music of Yusef Lateef"

R-14100342-1567855373-2073.jpeg.jpg

This cd keeps jumping into my transport. It's great music (I've long been a Lateef fan and I've become a Birchall fan) and it's the kind of recording that lets you know how your system is doing--very well-recorded, acoustic instruments clearly and cleanly presented.

Followed by . . . .

A Helen Merrill that was as far as I know only released in Japan and that I have had a crappy MP3 version from someone. . . so happy to have this on the new UHQCD release from Japan. Not essential, unless like me you are someone who just has to have all of Merrill's work if possible. . . .

This is very different than most other Giuffre recordings. The first 6 tracks have Giuffre in a Sonny Rollins mood. Straight ahead swinging with a somewhat bigger tone on tenor than usual for him. Jimmy Rowels shines on piano and Red Mitchell and Lawrence Marable play well too. The last 3 tunes are fillers and have a completely different sensibility than the first 6 tracks. I very much like this CD.
