For me - with high expectations based on the line-up - a bit underwhelming .... I really enjoy it. Then again I am a huge fan of Kenny's playing. Song For Abdullah is the standout track for me. Third Eyes is also very good. Kenny is on fire on this particular track. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted November 23, 2019 Report Posted November 23, 2019 Ok, I don't own this set. But a friend lent me this at one time. Simply amazing stuff. Quote

Gheorghe Posted November 23, 2019 Report Posted November 23, 2019 Great performance from 1967. I like very much Albert Heath´s drumming on this, but of course everybody plays great ! Quote

Robert Middleton Posted November 23, 2019 Report Posted November 23, 2019 A playlist of the first 20 years of ECM. About 200 albums in all. I think these were the greatest ECM years with a lot of classic, beautiful albums. And, for the most part, a lot more distinctive than the last 30 years. Albums from these artists: Arild Andersen, Bass Desires, Bennie Maupin, Bill Connors, Bill Frisell, Carla Bley, Chick Corea, Collin Walcott, Dave Holland, Dave Liebman, Eberhard Weber, Egberto Gismonti, Enrico Rava, Gary Burton, Jack DeJohnette, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, John Surman, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Wheeler, Miroslav Vitous, Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, Ralph Towner, Steve Kuhn, Steve Tibbitts, and Terje Rypdal. An amazing body of work.  Quote

I listened to "Great Friends" again, this time  back to front. Mix is still off in several weird ways I can't quite describe -- never heard so much variance before thataways on an album on a track to track basis, with all tracks seemingly from a single recording session -- but this time through the considerable virtues of the music are a good deal more apparent for me. Thanks for jogging my elbow. Quote
