Bluesnik
Another excellent comp from Strut. This time focusing on the funky Black Rio bands from the 70s. And here's another excellent comp from the Spanish label Vampi Soul. Sometimes it's a strange marriage between cumbia and surf:
JSngry
I came for (and left with) the Willie Maidens, but had a pretty darn good time with the Ken Hannas. Hank Levy, otoh...no. Never. Somebody should have stopped him at Don Ellis, but no. So in turn, I say - no. Also...with a rhythm section of John Worster, Jerry McKenzie, and the fully-integrated Ramon Lopez (and if anybody cares, Ramon Lopez was an integral part of the 70s Kenton Sound, with no really rhythmically participatory piano player, he got on in there and was necessary, unlike a "flavor", he was a nutrient in that band!)...Purity Of Purpose, Fully Achieved. I kinda like it for that, those were guys who believed, not a moment of doubt. But Hank Levy - no.
