Gary Smulyan's Wikipedia entry reads: "He studied at Hofstra University before working with Woody Herman."

For Dick Oatts it says: "In 1977 he was called by Thad Jones to join the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra."

Both were in the Mel Lewis Orchestra that I saw in 1989.
