I have a feeling those get overlooked a lot because he’s credited as the leader and probably less well known as some of his band mates. The Real Thing is another gem. And great to see Hayes is still alive and active on the scene! Quote

IMO, Hayes' Breath of Life is another really strong record in this same vein. Quote
HutchFan Posted Wednesday at 05:27 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 05:27 PM Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - "In My Prime," Vol. 1 (Timeless, 1978) Solid JP CD reissue I enjoy this incarnation of the Messengers with Bobby Watson and James Williams. On this release (and Vol. 2), the regular group is augmented with Curtis Fuller and Ray Mantilla. Quote

Expand Yes, I think that's what interests me, takes it out of the usual hard bop territory, just that bit, the bit that makes a difference. I don't know these albums at all so will be investigating them. I recently bought 'The Real Thing' in no small part down to your and @Pim's enthusiasm for it here, and I love it Quote
