There's an interesting writeup on all this in the new Wheeler biography (excellent). It was an early 8-track desk and there was strange placement of players and lots of bleed-through between tracks (Oxley in particular). The first mix was a disaster so Kenny brought Bob Cornford in to rework it, which did miracles apparently. From recollection the Incus LP mix has the same issues. That’s interesting, thanks Bob. I thought I was being overly critical as a result of listening through my new headphones. The first track in particular is a bit of a mess. Still, a great record. Quote
jazzbo Posted Tuesday at 11:51 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 11:51 AM It took me a while to get around to the ECM titles of Dave Holland. I heard a few when they were first released and they just didn’t click with me, but the past few years I realize how vital and interesting they are. This one I like a lot! Dave Holland Quintet “Extended Play: Live at Birdland” ECM 2 cd set, disc 1 Chris Potter – soprano, alto and tenor saxophones Robin Eubanks – trombone Steve Nelson – vibraphone, marimba Billy Kilson – drums Dave Holland – double-bass Dave Holland Quintet recorded at the Birdland jazz club over four days in November 2001 and released by ECM in 2003 40 Quote
