Dannie is one of my earliest favourites, saw him 3 times with Mingus, later with others Yesterday: Like them both, but the Cliff Jordon-John Gilmore session does not have such a good recording sound like the Griffin album. I don´t know what was wrong with RVG on that day, since Horace Silver´s piano sounds outright tinny. That´s not RVG´s famous piano sound..... Quote
jazzbo Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Duke Ellington “At the Bal Masque” Columbia cd 500×500 39.7 KB Although Duke’s Orchestra did do a stint at the Bal Masque in Miami, this is a studio album. Ray Nance really sounds good on this one. My cd version is from this box set: 296×300 17.5 KB Quote

Expand It is a Blue Mitchell CD on the Mainstream label. It is not one of my favorites. I played it to give it another try and was disappointed once more. There are many Blue Mitchell albums I much much prefer. Now playing: Quote
adh1907 Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Song for someone, Kenny Wheeler 2004 PSI edition. What a stunning record, mix of free and contemporary (as of 1973) jazz, but what a terrible mix! Someone needs to have another go at this and reissue it. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 24 Report Posted March 24 Starting off a little warmer morning with a great cd. . . Tom Harrell “Alternate Summer” HighNote This reminds me a bit of “Filles de Kilimanjaro” and “Miles in the Sky”. . .which is high praise from me. Quote

Expand That mix is probably as good as it will be, unfortunately. There's an interesting writeup on all this in the new Wheeler biography (excellent). It was an early 8-track desk and there was strange placement of players and lots of bleed-through between tracks (Oxley in particular). The first mix was a disaster so Kenny brought Bob Cornford in to rework it, which did miracles apparently. From recollection the Incus LP mix has the same issues. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 24 Report Posted March 24 I listened to the Stereo LP of “My Favorite Things” in the mono/stereo 2 LP package. It has taken me a long time over many years and many spins on cd, SACD and LP to really appreciate the disciplined focus of this album, and why it was a success and why it is a landmark release and was so responsible for Coltrane’s stardom. Now on to Ahmad Jamal “Emerald City Nights (Live At The Penthouse 1966-1968)” Elemental Music cd 2 Quote
