Quite the imagination, going back to his work with J-Mac. He made a few record after this one that are also interesting. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 2005 Mighty Quinn reissue CD. In such a rather modern context, Lionel Hampton sounded pretty much like Bags in many phrases, especiallly in blues changes. It show how much Bags came out of Lionel. Quote

I've not heard all of them but the ones I have were all wonderful, each in their own way. Quote

Currently listening to: Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband and Champion Jack Dupree – Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband And Jack Dupree I really do wish that there were better resources out there for revivalist trad / Dixieland / hot jazz. There's next to nothing in print and a complete absence on the internet. That's a fact that we shall all be rueing when the inevitable "inclusive" Dixieland revival trend kicks off on tiktok and none of us know anything about the one kind of jazz to which the Kids are listening. JSngry Posted January 2 Author Report Posted January 2 There's a duet record with Kenny Burrell that I've never heard. If you hear it, please report! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 Starting off with some Kenny Burrell. . . from the mid-seventies. Kenny Burrell “Sky Street” Fantasy LP Quote
jazzbo Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 On to Chet Baker "Mr. B" Timeless cd I've had this one for years, but it's the only one of the upcoming 5 cd box set of his Timeless recordings that I have. Looking forward to that! This is a good one. . . great for late night or early morning. Chet Baker – trumpet Michel Graillier – piano Riccardo del Fra – bass Philip Catherine – guitar (one track) Quote
jazzbo Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 It’s been too long since I played a recording of the wondrous Ms Maria. And this one is amazing. Just Tania and Eddie, so well-recorded. Some great beauty here and two masters at their best. Tania Maria (featuring Eddie Gomez) “Tempo” Indigo/Naive cd Quote
Rabshakeh Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband with Wingy Manone & Edmond Hall – Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband With Wingy Manone & Edmond Hall More for the second side with Edmond Hall. One of my favourite arrangements of St. Louis Blues on record. Now dipping my toes back into this: Anthony Braxton – 9 Compositions (Iridium) 2006 This is the first listen in over a decade, during which I have retrospectively warmed to some of Braxton's box sets. I still don't care for this one at all. I find it very charmless and undercooked. Quote

The only period of AB's music that has done so Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 A very good Canadian trumpet player. If you like Art Farmer, you will enjoy Kevin Dean's playing. Quote

The only period of AB's music that has done so I generally agree (although there are other periods when I sometimes allow myself to question whether he is just winging it...). But the Ghost Trance stuff always seemed to be designed with a view to securing funding, more than making music worth releasing. I'm impressed, looking back through the power of Google, at both how unanimously full of praise the critics were at the time, and just how many academic treatments of the music and concept are returned by a simple search. But what an amazing line up of musicians! Almost half of them went on to be future leaders. Not so young now, sadly, but for a long time the great hopes. Edited January 3 by Rabshakeh Quote

I have a friend whose taste is usually reliable who thinks that box is one of Braxton's greatest achievements. I think it may have helped that he saw the band, or one very similar play GTM live Quote
