I interviewed him after he had undergone hellacious cancer treatments that resulted in nerve damage to one arm, so he focused on writing and arranging. Not long after our chat, I traveled to NYC to hear the public debut of his big band, which played his charts. They made one studio recording, which is worth aacquiring. I too, am sorry to hear of his passing. I liked Peter's playing very much and own many of his CD's (though not the big band recording, which I just downloaded from itunes). Cancer is a terrible disease of course, but in a way I'm not surprised he suffered from it. When I first saw him live in Toronto in 1980, he smoked one cigarette after another on the stage. I got this in high school, an out-of-phase LP reissue with revised cover art. It was an important gateway album out of jazz and into space age bachelor pad music. I eventually got the much better sounding CD, with the original cover art. Love Supreme Live in Seattle I love very much. But I couldn´t do anything else at the same time. Coltrane means very very atent listening for me, to get every second of the music..... Quote
jazzbo Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 John Coltrane "Turning Point--The Bethlehem Years" Solid Records Japan 2024 2 cd set, disc 2 This disc has the quintet sides. An easier listen than the big band tracks with all the alternates and breakdowns (though lots of those). Quote

Rabshakeh Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 Webster Lewis And The Post-Pop Space-Rock Be-Bop Gospel Tabernacle Chorus And Orchestra BABY! – Live At Club 7 For reasons that escape me, this record has just received a 4 LP deluxe reissue, like it was On The Corner or Languidity or something. Does anyone know anything about it? It sounds like the kind of record I would be happy to find by accident if I was a hip hop producer in 1995. Quote

Bit of a 'Grail' on Rare Groove/Soul scene is my understanding. I played some, sounds good to me but not 4LPs worth. I have a DJ friend of a certain age who was all over this when it was announced. I have the original double LP nd the CD reissue that was released some years ago. That was a really good band. Consider selling the LP as it goes for good money. Webster Lewis never got the credit he deserved for his great organ playing with Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock and others. At that time synths took over and he never decided on one or the other, it seems. Edited January 2 by mikeweil Quote
