Daniel Humair - Surrounded 1964-1987.

Saw Humair live a few weeks ago, and he was not playing well, unfortunately. The man is 85, after all - and it shows. Wanted to listen to him at his prime, and this compilation of various live recordings is an excellent showcase for a truly great (and I don't use this word lightly) jazz drummer.

Was not aware of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet recording @  Châteauvallon in 1971 feat the European Rhythm Machine aka Gordon Beck + Ron Mathewson + Daniel Humair ....

Sonny Rollins - This Is What I Do (Milestone, 2000)

A young man I know -- a close friend of my of my two adult sons since childhood -- is sort of like a third son to me.  He had a tough time growing up and spent a lot of time around our house.  In the last year or so, this young man has begun exploring jazz -- so he pings me regularly via text message asking about records and artists.  (He now lives in another state.)  Earlier today, he was asking me about my favorite sax players.

Not that I need any excuse to listen to Sonny.  But that's how I got to him today.

Sharing the jazz love.
