Miles Davis "Milestones" Sony Blu-Spec CD2 two cd set (stereo disc and mono disc). 

I'm listening to the stereo, first time in a long time (generally chose mono before, which I had in better editions). Sound is very nice! I love these performances; this is an often overlooked Miles masterpiece.

And. . . "The Man in the Green Shirt" as the song title from Weather Report goes.

I like how you can tell that Sonny Rollins was a big influence.  Ford's got Sonny's big, striding sound.

I like how it's later Sonny that's the influence. That gazillion notes in one self-contained arc of a phrase thing. He's one of the very few players who has picked up on that part of Sonny.

And he does it his own way, like you say.

His early records didn't really get there, imo, as nice as they were. It wasn't until those Candid records that he jumped up and out of the speakers. And he's not let up since!

Yup.  American-African Blues (on Candid) was the record that made me a convert.

From his earlier years, I actually think Ford's one New World album, Loxodonta Africana, is better than any of the Muse LPs.

I think Continuum may shade it but they are both very impressive.

His drumming in Lehman's Octet is pretty impressive too, it certainly was live.

If I could be bothered to do albums of the year this would be high up and all the better for being a completely new discovery and a bit of a punt.  Hints of Kenny Wheeler's writing for Norma.
