Woody Herman And His Orchestra – The 3 Herds

👍 This is the first album of earlier Herman I purchased. (I was into the Fantasy recordings at the time). Love it. Great compilation.

Absolutely outstanding in every respect. Perhaps my favorite big band recording (certainly in the top 5).

Cool. I bought all the music on UHQCD from Japan. Don't have the book.

The CDs are the same as the Japanese edition I believe, but come in a binder not disk cases. The book is hard backed and covers Blossom’s full career as well as the Fontana years. Comes in a nice hard slip case about the size of a 10” LP.

First impression from ‘That’s Just The Way...’ is that the mastering is clearer than the original from Fontana in 1970.

Yes, the mastering on the UHQCD (likely the same except for the UHQCD aspect) is phenomenal imo. I opted for this way as I do collect the Japanese versions, and the book I probably would look at twice. The pricing worked out about the same either way.

Joel Ross “Who Are You?” Blue Note cd

Mr. Ross impresses me with his writing and playing more and more and having Immanuel Wilkins on board is an added big plus.

I waited with the box set until a certain outlet discounted it, so it was a no brainier.

Regretting not going to see Blossom Dearie at Ronnie Scott’s when I had the chance. The trouble was, she had a reputation of giving the audience a b*llocking, in retrospect good on her but a bit intimidating for youngsters. I do remember seeing her on TV on the ‘Parkinson’ (RIP) show though.

Woody Herman's Big New Herd – At The Monterey Jazz FestivalR-1028149-1185734718.jpg.44f6669218570be6516b799a5930cc9e.jpg

I really enjoyed this one. Possibly more than the classic early comps. I think that is down to better fidelity (important for big band recordings) and the monster talent level of this band.

Now enjoying this crunchy jazz rock record from 2017:
