Trad altoist Cap'n John Handy, rather than the late 60s alto player John Handy III.

This record's great. I don't know why it took me so long to uncover Handy's music. Right on the border between trad, swing and R&B. Super tight and full of juice. Trumpeter Cuff Billett is great on this one too.

On my 4th listen to this, my early impression is that it'd be hard to beat for a single disc of Hawk.

I agree.  It's a tremendous album, some of my favorite Hawkins.

Glenn Osser. Seems to have been the de facto Mathis guy in those days. Totally competent, but maybe teetering just a teensy bit towards a lack of real personality.

But jeez, on something like that, Mathis is so intense it's personality enough for the whole song. All the arrangement has to do is to, above all, not suck and then just keep the runway lit.

Mission accomplished then.

I had fun reviewing Mathis  witn enthusiasm back in the day. My recollection ia that the more or less orchestral timbres he could come up with in live performance were almost unreal.
