Larry Kart Posted June 14, 2023 Report Posted June 14, 2023 Sure do like that rhythm section: Brown as they say is a different drummer -- a gas. The 10 minutes plus version here of "My Ideal" is almost as hypnotic as Grant Green's "Idle Moments." ' Quote

But as great as Larry Willis is, I like his later pianist Mulgrew Miller much more. It must have to do something with his touch, his sound and his lines or chords. And Tony Reedus on drums.... Quote

jazzbo Posted June 14, 2023 Report Posted June 14, 2023 Been thinking of my Dad this week as I always talked to him about the news each evening his last few years. And boy is there news to talk about. So I’m starting today with this one: A favorite of his, and something I’ve heard with him on and off over my life Quote

It would be hard for me to choose between Larry Willis and Mulgrew Miller. Miller is certainly more forceful. I consider him to be one of McCoy's "heirs." Willis, on the other hand, is more lyrical, subtle. In the past, Willis talked about his indebtedness to Herbie. I love all of them. Quote
Dub Modal Posted June 14, 2023 Report Posted June 14, 2023 Easing into some Sun Ra with Gerry, Johnny, Max, Clifford et. al. I like that Williamson/Clark/Lewis rhythm section on the Hodges/Mulligan. Music to drink coffee to. Streaming the Ra, but notice the ESP set has some pdf's that look interesting. Probably worthwhile picking it up. Quote
