JSngry Posted September 14, 2022 Author Report Posted September 14, 2022 Mad crazy skills as far as pitch and phrasing. Would I want to go into a dark room and ponder my existence with this? No. But if I just wanted to hear some skills on display, yeah, I would turn on the light and let this in the room for a little set of this. Quote
HutchFan Posted September 14, 2022 Report Posted September 14, 2022 Ray Barretto - Jazz (Fania, 2008) Superb collection of jazz- and descarga-oriented Fania cuts, compiled by Bobby Sanabria. I'm often not a fan of compilation albums -- but this is off the chain! I'd chalk it up at a full FIVE stars. Quote

HutchFan Posted September 14, 2022 Report Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) More Barretto: Ray Barretto & New World Spirit - Taboo (Concord Picante, 1994) This album isn't astounding like the compilation above (IMO). It's more straightforwardly conventional "Latin Jazz". Even so, I still really dig it. Check out the selection of tunes. Along with a few originals, they cover Nat's "Work Song," Stanley's "Brother Tom," and McCoy's "Effendi" -- plus "Lazy Afternoon." It works. 34 minutes ago, Rabshakeh said: Max Roach & Anthony Braxton – One In Two - Two In One (HatHut) That one has never quite grabbed me like Birth and Rebirth. ... What are your impressions? Maybe it's time to pull it from the shelf & give it another listen. I know this is wrong, but I like it more. I think that Roach is more in the background, so Braxton gets free-er reign. I like his melodic ideas, which are unusually simple for him. Birth and Rebirth never really took for me - to my ears Braxton isn't quite up to what Roach is doing. I am currently on this one: Mentioned recently on this board. Quote

I'll give One In Two - Two In One another listen. Quote
