Within 8 bars of the title/opening track, Sir Charles Thompson's playing had put a smile on my face and that smile reappeared every time he played for the rest of this CD.  No offense to Eric Schneider -- he seems like a perfectly fine reed player and he certainly loves Ben Webster and that is an admirable quality in any individual -- but each track where he is featured just means that much less time for Sir Charles to play.  A delightful recording.

Another delightful recording, for different reasons.  This is a Feb. 22, 1970 concert in Paris.

Chick Corea and Origin at the Blue Note, from the Patreon page.  It is the same band as the Blue Note box and single disc (Steve Wilson, Bob Sheppard, Steve Davis and bassist Avishai Cohen), but with Jeff Ballard in place of Adam Cruz.

This french reissue= one of my "Island" records out of many from Shorty. As hot as this April 2020 in Germany.

Yes, definitely on my short list of desert island big band recordings. The mono recording quality is great.

Now something completely different

Fully agree. I had an early introduction to Blues Express at the age of 19 when I was blown away by "Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud" on a Radio Luxembourg broadcast. (BBC was never too keen on jazz- the devil's music, you know)^_^

This (1957-58) is my favorite period for Harold Land's tenor saxophone. It is before the Coltrane influence changed his playing. He sounds wonderful on the 2 sessions on which he appears. Elmo Hope is also in great form throughout.41DA0uxnV7L._AC_UY218_ML3_.jpg

I have the Mastertakes from the Savoy Sessions. I thought About Posting it on the "Late 40´s thread" ….

Yes, indeed!

Love the tracks with a boppish young Junior Mance plus Roy Haynes.

So many later-to-be-notable pianists passed through the ranks of Lester's little bands.

Horace Silver in his autobiography recalls his apprenticeship there and how Prez called him        "Horacescope"
