Mr Mingus Posted March 8, 2017 Report Posted March 8, 2017 Mosaic is a very special company for us Jazz lovers. Most of their stuff is must-have in my book. But there are other box sets out there that are pretty amazing. Obviously this will depend on the type of Jazz you listen to, but I'd like to hear your opinions on those box sets that are special to you. Don't limit yourself to one! Mine is: Duke Ellington - The Centennial Edition: Complete RCA Victor Recordings Set is OOP, 24 CD's. I just love Duke! Quote

JSngry Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 Not sure if it's still relevant to anybody, but at one time, pre-internet & w/o ready access to serious record stores, this was very special to me. Quote

Me too, my parents had it. The Time/Life 3 LP boxes deepened my love and understanding of pre-wwII stuff. A Charly 3 LP box of Sun stuff was also formative. Long ago and far away. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) Some of mine (yes, like Mingus said - depending on the type of jazz one listens to ): - Keynote Recordings (Fresh Sounds CD box if you cannot source the 21-LP Japanese LP edition or any comparable one - which very likely will be the case) - Complete Nocturne Recordings Vol. 1 (Fresh Sounds - there never was a Vol. 2) - The full run of the Svensk Jazzhistoria 2- or 3-CD box sets on the Caprice label and - depending on one's personal tastes - quite a few BEAR FAMILY box sets (Mosaic is far from being the only bright star on the box set sky - particularly if FIRST TIME REISSUES are concerned) Edited March 9, 2017 by Big Beat Steve Quote

erwbol Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 (edited) Anthony Braxton: Willisau (Quartet) 1991 on Hat Hut Records, 4 CDs (2 studio, 2 live) of his quartet with Marylin Crispell, Marc Dresser & Gerry Hemingway. Besides the peak performances, the sound is also best of all the quartet's releases. Edited March 9, 2017 by erwbol Quote
Scott Dolan Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 OH! I forgot one: John Coltrane - Live Trane: The European Tours That takes all the horridly mixed stereo Pablo releases and mixes them back down to mono, resulting in a FAR better product. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 Joe Henderson's Complete Milestones Years box is probably co-equally my #1, along with any of several Miles boxes. I'm a thousand miles from home (back in St. Louis visiting my Dad this weekend), or I'd survey my collection -- but the Henderson was the very first thing I thought of (and it hadn't been mentioned yet). I was going to mention that JoeHen set, too. I got it several years ago REAL cheap - I think it was being remaindered at the time. Excellent stuff! Quote

I'm sure that was an important set of albums to many a listener. It depends on where one is in one's jazz journey and what one is expecting from a boxed set as to whether it might be "must have" or not. For some one newly exploring jazz -- or exploring new fields within jazz -- the Smithsonian has put together some other fine sets. Two on big band jazz one for various jazz pianist and one on jazz singers Some other sets I would consider essential: and this music in one form or another Edited March 10, 2017 by duaneiac Quote
Dave Garrett Posted March 10, 2017 Report Posted March 10, 2017 Quite a few that have been mentioned already, and a couple that haven't: Quote
