Mark Stryker Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Six takes of "Just Squeeze Me" from an ultimately rejected Kenny Burrell session for Blue Note from 4/12/59. With Tommy Flanagan, George Duvivier and Elvin Jones. This was one of three tunes they tried that day. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 This made it out of the vaults to youtube land? Then why oh why can't I hear the Gene Harris/Grant Green date, also rejected? Quote
Milestones Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 It must be coming...just about everything comes out of the vaults these days. As for Kenny Burrell, this is a bit underwhelming compared to his version on Ellington is Forever. Quote
Niko Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 Can't really check it out right now but it seems that same channel has a few unissued Grant Green tracks, even though not with Gene Harris https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJcWXaSyAKQKT5k9IoB_nhQ/search?query=grant+green Quote
Jim R Posted March 7, 2017 Report Posted March 7, 2017 I was completely unaware of "Joe Louis", and I live on Youtube. Wow. It's almost like being in a state of (semi-euphoric) panic trying to look through what's been uploaded already, sorting it out, and thinking about trying to listen to it all... especially when one gets distracted by the inevitable Youtube tangent phenomenon. felser Posted March 8, 2017 Report Posted March 8, 2017 With the exception of the first Bobby Hutcherson session, have we actually seen Blue Note issue rejected sessions? Lot's of unissued sessions have rightly eventually come out, but not rejected sessions to my memory. And that is probably as it should be. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 8, 2017 Report Posted March 8, 2017 There's Andrew Hill's Passing Ships, but I think that was rejected for technical reasons which were, more or less, fixed. There are a few unissued sessions and stray tunes yet to see the light of day, more yet to see domestic release or reissue. So I wouldn't expect any rejected out soon. Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 This alternate of My Favorite Things (from Green's Matador session with Tyner and Jones) is quite good. What's the story on these alternate takes? Did Cuscuna reject them as bonus tracks for quality reasons or do the alternate takes no longer exist in the EMI vaults? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 Still a crime The Trainwreck hasn't been issued in full (with complete alternate takes of four of the five tunes, no less). Honestly, I think a lot of it is better than Natural Essence, (the ballad, most definitely better than the one on NE). The whole thing hangs together beautifully, if you ask me. Rejected, afaik (or certainly that's been Michael's opinion all these years). Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted March 12, 2017 Report Posted March 12, 2017 Green Acid would have been a perfect name for an album during the Acid Jazz phase. and it's 'unissued', not rejected, as are the leftovers from Carryin' On, two Jimmie Web tunes which have never to my knowledge seen the light of day. I've noticed that many rejected sessions were re-recorded soon afterwards with the same personnel except for a change of drummers. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 16, 2017 Report Posted March 16, 2017 Interesting posting name - Joe Louis. Hmmmm, the first name of the guy I used to get these sessions from was Louis. I wonder if it's him? If so, it would be very surprising considering how closely he used to guard these session tapes. Maybe he's just getting to that age where he realizes that he won't be around forever? Quote
